You've probably seen the new 5v5 hero competitive game that just launched on China servers last month. A few of my friends studying in Denmark downloaded it excitedly two weeks ago, only to be shocked when they entered their first match: the latency on a bare connection hovered around 380ms, skills took half a second to activate after pressing, and they couldn't even flash when an enemy assassin jumped on them. They dropped two ranks after just three ranked matches.
It's not that your internet is bad. Even with a 1000M fiber connection in Denmark, the physical distance to China game servers means data has to travel across most of the Eurasian continent. On public networks, data has to jump through multiple intermediate nodes, so latency will never be lower than 200ms at best. When there are lots of players online in China in the evening, ISP出口 congestion causes ping spikes and packet loss constantly, making competitive games completely unplayable.
I've tested several common solutions. First I tried changing DNS to Google's 8.8.8.8 or China's 114.114.114.114, and honestly there was no noticeable effect. At best it shaved a few seconds off the game loading time, but in-match latency still stayed above 300ms, with the same packet loss issues. Later I tried buying a China cloud server and setting up my own forwarding. After an afternoon of tinkering, latency did drop to around 230ms, but it lagged badly during evening peak hours, and the server got blocked frequently, requiring reconfiguration every few days. Getting disconnected mid-ranked match happened regularly, and there was nothing I could do about the rank drops.
Then I switched to QuickFox's dedicated China return line, specifically selecting the competitive game exclusive channel. I was stunned when I first entered the game: latency stabilized at around 75ms, almost the same as when I play in China. Last week I queued for ranked matches with friends in China, playing ADC: kiting and casting skills were completely responsive, and I could flash away from enemy abilities in time. I played for an entire evening without any ping spikes, and even the common character teleportation issues caused by packet loss disappeared entirely.
Here's a very clear comparison: before, when I cast an area skill, I had to wait half a second after the cast bar finished for the skill to actually appear. Now the skill activates immediately when I press the button, the exact same feel as when I play on WiFi at my home in China. I live in Aarhus, using a regular 500M home broadband plan from local provider TDC. Even connecting during peak hours, I haven't experienced lag. Last Saturday evening, during China's peak gaming hours, I played ranked for three hours straight, with latency consistently between 70-85ms, no disconnections at all.
