Last month, I planned to watch the WNBA playoffs with a friend studying in Budapest. He said that during the regular season match between the Lynx and Mystics, the stream was so laggy that by the time the third quarter ended, the first quarter still hadn't finished loading. He switched between three platforms, either getting a geo-restriction notice or unable to hold 1080p quality for more than 10 seconds, often dropping to 480p pixelated quality.
This issue isn't actually because your internet is bad. First figure out the root cause of the buffering, then adjust accordingly without wasting money unnecessarily.
First, understand why your stream is buffering
First rule out issues with your local network: test your local download speed. Regular home broadband in Hungary only needs a download speed of 20Mbps or higher to stream 1080p 60fps live content smoothly. If you have buffering issues scrolling Instagram or watching YouTube, contact your ISP first to report the problem, that's a separate issue.
90% of buffering issues come down to two reasons:
The first is regional copyright restrictions. Domestic WNBA broadcasting rights in China are held by Migu and CCTV Sports, while in Europe it's DAZN. If you try to access Chinese streaming platforms directly, the server will detect your Hungarian IP, either blocking access entirely or assigning you the lowest priority bandwidth, which is guaranteed to cause buffering.
The second is cross-border link loss. Even if you can load the stream, the Chinese broadcast signal has to pass through at least 3 cross-border links to reach Hungary. During peak hours, node congestion can push packet loss rates above 30%, meaning 3 out of every 10 data packets are lost, naturally causing buffering and loading spinners.
Tested effective solutions, adjust in order
First, methods that don't require extra software, suitable for people who only want to watch one match occasionally:
Try switching to a local European streaming platform like DAZN. If you have an account, just search for WNBA to find the live stream. Most of the time, as long as your local network is fine, there won't be buffering. The downside is that commentary is in English or Hungarian, with no Chinese commentary options. If you want to watch exclusive tactical analysis or guest连线 available only on Chinese platforms, this method won't work.
Also, don't randomly change your DNS. I tried changing DNS to the domestic Chinese 114.114.114.114 before, and not only did it not solve buffering, it slowed down local website loading. Changing DNS is basically useless in cross-border scenarios, and will actually interfere with local domain name resolution.
If you regularly watch Chinese WNBA broadcasts, or specifically want Chinese commentary, the most stable method is to use a China return acceleration tool to switch your IP back to China. My friends and I tested several tools for fans in Europe, and QuickFox's dedicated sports live stream line is the most stable. During the previous regular season overtime match between Lynx and Mystics, it ran 1080p the entire time without buffering, with latency consistently under 2 seconds, so I could complain about plays in sync with friends in China without any delay.
