Why Can't I Access Qing Yu Nian Season 2 Playback Page in the US?
I spent 3 months on an academic visit in California in the first half of 2024, right when Qing Yu Nian Season 2 premiered across Chinese streaming platforms. When I opened the domestic versions of Tencent Video and iQiyi apps, I immediately got a pop-up saying "This content is not available in your region". The logic behind this is very simple: the copyright of Qing Yu Nian Season 2 purchased by domestic long-video platforms only covers mainland China. The platform identifies the user's location through IP, and will directly block playback requests when detecting a non-mainland China IP, regardless of whether the account is registered in China or has a membership.
Comparison of 3 Solutions I Tested
Free Proxies / Public DNS
At first, I tried free proxies and public DNS addresses shared online to save trouble. After modifying the settings, I could indeed enter the playback page, but the experience was extremely poor: on a 100Mbps bandwidth in the western US, the maximum resolution was only 720p, loading 1080p took more than 10 seconds, and buffering occurred every 5 minutes. After 3 days of continuous use, the platform detected the proxy behavior twice and directly disconnected the playback. Later, I checked my browser history and found that this free proxy had secretly uploaded my browsing data, which was extremely risky, so I abandoned it immediately.
Regular Overseas VPN
Then I tried several mainstream overseas VPNs used by my classmates, and chose the one with the lowest latency when connecting to Chinese nodes. The actual experience: latency was stable at 250-320ms, could support 1080p playback, but dragging the progress bar required 3-5 seconds of buffering. During the peak internet hours in China (evening time), stuttering was very frequent. Moreover, most VPNs have limited bandwidth for Chinese nodes, and if you open a WeChat video call while watching the show, it will directly get stuck and disconnect. Most importantly, the core function of these VPNs is to access overseas websites, with very little optimization for domestic long-video platforms, so there are often cases where you have a Chinese IP but still can't play the content.
Professional China Access Acceleration Tool (Best Tested Solution)
Finally, I tried QuickFox, which specializes in back-to-China acceleration. I specially recorded the actual test data: on a 100Mbps bandwidth in the western US, the latency when connecting to the exclusive node for Tencent Video was stable at 120-180ms, 4K content loaded in only 2 seconds, no buffering when dragging the progress bar, and no disconnection or copyright prompt occurred after watching 8 episodes in a row. Even the live press conference for Qing Yu Nian Season 2 was completely synchronized with no time lag. The Sony Android TV in the homestay I stayed at had the QuickFox TV version installed, and it worked directly after connecting to WiFi. On weekends, I invited several fans to watch the 4K version via screen casting, and the experience was exactly the same as in China.
Pitfall Avoidance Reminders
First, do not use unqualified free proxies / cracked tools, most of them collect users' personal information and even implant malicious plugins, which may lead to account theft at best, and property loss at worst. Second, do not record and distribute the content for personal viewing, to avoid violating copyright regulations. Third, if you use Apple devices, try to download acceleration tools from official channels, do not use installation packages outside the App Store, to avoid the device being jailbroken and implanted with viruses.
