At a Chinese gathering in Irvine last week, several international students who just arrived in the US asked me with their phones: why can't Tantan load any nearby people after swiping for 10 minutes, and the two profiles that finally showed up were located in Seattle?
I checked their settings, and 90% of them fell into the same trap: Tantan's location service logic prioritizes matching users in domestic IP segments. When you are in the US using a local carrier's network, your IP location shows California directly. Tantan's server will automatically put you into the very small pool of Chinese users with overseas IPs, so naturally you can't find people nearby. Also, Tantan throttles requests from overseas IPs heavily. I tested Tantan's nearby list on AT&T's network, the average loading time was 27 seconds, with a success rate of only 23%. The users that occasionally showed up were all over 300 kilometers away, completely unusable for normal matching.
I tested 7 or 8 solutions for my friends before: modifying GPS location, changing DNS, using public proxies, none of them worked. Modifying location only changes your phone's local location data, but your request IP is still in the US, Tantan's server will verify it and reject the modified location immediately. Public proxies often have latency over 400ms, and you will get risk-controlled and banned after swiping a few times, which is not worth the risk.
The most stable solution is to route your network requests through a domestic node, so Tantan's server will recognize your IP as domestic, and naturally push you the normal user pool of domestic users or local Chinese in your area. I tested QuickFox for three months, connecting to a domestic dedicated line node, and the IP location showed Shanghai. When I opened Tantan and swiped for nearby people, the average loading time was 3.2 seconds, with a 100% success rate. The profiles shown were either local users in Hangzhou (when I selected a Hangzhou node) or local Chinese users in Los Angeles, the matching efficiency was at least 6 times higher than before.

Q: Will my Tantan account get banned?
I tested it for three months using a regular personal dedicated node, no bulk operations, and never received a risk control reminder. Don't use free public nodes, which are shared by many people and their IPs have already been marked by Tantan, you can easily be misjudged as a marketing account.
Q: Do I need to modify my phone's location?
Not at all. As long as the node has a normal domestic IP, Tantan will prioritize matching users based on IP location. If you want to match users in a specific city in China, just select the node corresponding to that region. Last week I selected a Hangzhou node, and all the profiles shown were local users in Hangzhou, with a location error of less than 2 kilometers.
Two notes: First, completely close Tantan's background before connecting to the node, and reopen it before swiping, to avoid cached IP information not being updated. Second, don't switch nodes in different regions frequently. Switching once or twice a day is fine, but switching three or four times an hour can easily trigger risk control, and you will need to verify your phone number to unblock your account.
