Let me start with a pit I stepped on

When I first went to study in London in 2019, I searched for a "free overseas accelerator" and downloaded it casually in order to play the Chinese server of *Jian Wang 3*. As a result, the latency was constantly floating above 400ms, I died as soon as I switched targets in raid instances, and the service crashed 3 times a week, which deducted all my guild DKP. Later, I switched to a reliable tool, and the latency stabilized at 120-150ms, and I almost never had any problems playing raids or arenas. It was then that I realized that my previous perception that "an accelerator is just an IP changing tool" was completely wrong.

What exactly is an overseas accelerator? Core logic breakdown

Essentially, an overseas accelerator is a dedicated service for cross-border network transmission optimization, which is different from the ordinary VPN you usually use.

The core of an ordinary VPN is to change your egress IP through an encrypted tunnel to bypass regional access restrictions, but it does not optimize the transmission path at all - many free VPNs even route your traffic to overloaded public nodes, which is slower than direct connection. The core of an overseas accelerator is "transmission optimization". Its underlying layer is a carrier-grade dedicated line network, which is equivalent to opening an exclusive high-speed channel between your location and the domestic server, bypassing the congested nodes of the public cross-border network and the bottleneck of the international exit.

Core differences at the technical level, speaking with measured data

I did a comparative test in Sydney last year, and the local broadband downlink rate was 500Mbps. When directly connecting to the Alibaba Cloud Hangzhou node in China:

  • Packet loss rate: 18%-25% (up to 40% during peak evening hours)

For example, if you watch Tencent Sports' NBA live broadcast in Europe, if you connect directly, you either can't open it after 10 minutes of loading, or it freezes for 30 seconds every 10 seconds of viewing. When using an accelerator, because it uses a dedicated line, it can reach the upper limit of your local bandwidth, and 4K live broadcasts will basically not freeze.

I would like to mention a misunderstanding here: many people think that accelerators are used to unlock copyright restrictions, but that's not right. Copyright restrictions are determined by the platform based on IP. The accelerator just helps you change to a domestic IP by the way, and the core value is still to solve the problem of transmission stuttering - even if you change to a domestic IP, you will still freeze into a PPT on the public network.

It should be noted here that the game adaptation of different accelerators is different. For example, if you are overseas and need to access the domestic company intranet, transfer large files to the domestic cloud server, or hold a domestic video conference, direct connection often causes stuttering, dropped connections, and half-failed file transfers. Using the accelerator's dedicated line transmission will be much more stable. I have a friend who does cross-border e-commerce. Before, it took 5 hours to transfer 10G of product materials to the domestic operation team via direct connection, but after using the accelerator, it was finished in 40 minutes.

Clarification of common misunderstandings, don't waste money

The first pitfall: Can free accelerators be used? I have tested at least 10 free overseas accelerators, 90% of which make profits by selling user traffic, either limit speed and traffic, or are full of advertisements, and some even steal users' personal information. It's okay to use it occasionally for emergencies, but it's really not recommended for long-term use. The money you save is not enough to compensate for the loss of your account information.

The second pitfall: Is more nodes better? I tested an accelerator that claimed to have more than 3000 nodes before, but there were only 4 domestic dedicated line nodes that could be connected stably. The rest either couldn't connect, or the latency was higher than direct connection. Don't just look at the number of nodes when choosing. It depends on whether there is a dedicated carrier-grade dedicated line, which is the core.

The third pitfall: Is lower latency always better? It depends on the scenario. When watching videos, you can't feel the difference between 200ms and 100ms latency, as long as there is no packet loss. When playing competitive games, lower latency is indeed better, but it also depends on the jitter rate - if the latency is stable at 150ms and the jitter is no more than 10ms, the experience is much better than the latency floating between 80-200ms. I used to play the Chinese server of *League of Legends* with an accelerator that showed a latency of 90ms, but it often ping spiked, and suddenly stuck to 300ms during team fights, which was worse than a stable 140ms.

What kind of people need to buy an overseas accelerator?

If you are a Chinese or international student living abroad for a long time, and you often watch domestic videos, listen to music, and play domestic server games, then this money basically can't be saved. It's only a few hundred yuan a year, which is more cost-effective than buying a membership every month.

If you only occasionally return to China and want to access foreign websites, then you don't need to buy a special overseas accelerator, and an ordinary VPN is enough.

If you are engaged in cross-border office work, often need to transfer large files to China, and hold video conferences, then you must choose an enterprise-level dedicated line accelerator. Ordinary civilian accelerators do not have enough bandwidth and will still be stuck during peak hours.

Finally, a small selection tip: Most regular accelerators now have free trials. You can download it first and test the scenarios you often use, such as opening the video platform you often watch, playing two games you often play, testing for 2-3 days, and buying an annual card if you think it is stable. Don't directly recharge for several years at the beginning. Many small brands go out of business while operating. I stepped on this pit before, recharged a 2-year membership, and couldn't find anyone after 3 months of use.
